Gustave Flaubert was a learned wild guy, impassioned by letters and good style. A childhood friend of Alfred Le Poittevin, the brother of Laure de Maupassant, he discovered the literary gifts of Guy de Maupassant. Flaubert became the spiritual mentor of Maupassant. He trained him and died when Guy was ready to publish. Frequently the Maupassants and Georges Sand, Camille de Saint-Phale bumped into Flaubert from time to time in Normandy or at Nohant.
